Gabriola Players will be presenting two one-act plays this Spring:
The first is Living in Paradise, written by and starring Gabriola’s own Lesley Hazeldine as Maggie, with Charlie Cheffins as her husband Stew. It is a very funny look at a couple new to Gabriola. It covers their arrival, and then jumps ten years to reveal how they are coping with Island life. The play touches on many Island concerns. Nothing is sacred. Gabriolans will recognize themselves in many, if not all, of the issues that the couple confront. Director Jenn Feenan says, “It has been my pleasure to work with Lesley and Charlie. They are fully committed to lifting the words from the page and producing an evening of lively entertainment. Be ready to laugh…. a lot!”
The second play is another comedy, but of a very different sort. Virtual Reality is a dark comedy filled with life-and-death struggles, status shifts and the extraordinary power the mind can have over our perceptions. Playwright Alan Arkin delivers an intriguing message about what happens when power gets away from us, and in the process points to the power of drama to create an alternative reality. Donna Deacon directs this sharply funny play featuring two of Gabriola’s favourite actors, Dave Innell and Joe DiCara.
The 2018 One-Act Play Festival will have performances on April 6, 7, and 8 at the Rollo Centre.
