Gabriola Players presented its first production in 2004 and since 2007 has been incorporated as a non-profit society under the BC Societies Act. In June 2013, Gabriola Players was approved as a Registered Charity under the Canada Revenue Act with the registration number 83520 3753 RR0001.
As a non-profit, we work diligently to present local theatre that is both entertaining and affordable, keeping ticket prices low as we aim to break even financially. Our main sources of revenue are ticket sales (75%), sponsor advertising (15%), memberships (5%) and donations (5%), though most donations go to our Don Whitton Memorial Bursary Fund rather than into general funds. In recent years, we are thrilled that our enthusiastic audiences support sales of up to 900 tickets across our four or five annual performances, with half of those sales generated by our Christmas Panto.
Like many other businesses, and especially performing arts organizations, this pandemic period has been challenging financially because Gabriola Players is not able to present those live performances we normally love to stage, both for our own enjoyment as theatre enthusiasts, but also for the enjoyment of our supportive and loyal audience. We have recently experimented (relatively successfully) with virtual theatre over Zoom as a way of adapting to be able to do what we love and stay in touch with our audiences.
Nevertheless, ticket sales and revenues are a fraction of a normal year, and we have also foregone advertising revenue (both of which are critical to being able to cover our not insignificant annual overhead costs). Despite working to minimize discretionary operating costs, we do have some mandatory costs not related to staging our productions, for example, inventory storage rental, insurance, website/email presence, PO Box rental, to name a few. Thus at the recent AGM we projected a deficit of several thousand dollars for this season.
In this context we are immensely grateful for any donations you can make to help us stay financially healthy until we can again return to presenting live theatre and financial break even. We appreciate all donations and will issue an income tax receipt for any donations of $25 or more. Here are the ways in which you can do that:
- mail a cheque to Gabriola Players Theatre Society, PO Box 374, Gabriola, BC V0R1X0
- by e-transfer to email@example.com
- donate using the following PayPal donate button (including via credit card)
- donate via the Canada Helps charitable site (also via credit card) for which a tax receipt is available immediately
Again we very much appreciate and thank our loyal and supportive members and audience.
