Kerry Woodrow, who directed our 2023 production of Norm Foster’s Halfway There, is back in the director’s seat for Beyond the Sea by Kristen Da Silva.
It is no surprise that Foster, a Canadian comedy-writing legend, is a big fan of Da Silva’s work. Kerry explains why Gabriola Players has also become a fan her work.
Why this play and why now?
“While looking for a play to stage for our spring production, I wanted something delightful and funny without being frivolous,” says Kerry.
“I also wanted to highlight one of the amazing and talented Canadian writers we have here in our glorious and free sovereign country. That is what initially drew me to Kristen DaSilva. She is known for writing hilarious plays that deal with some extremely serious themes. As Kristen says, ‘I think that comedy is a doorway to some tough conversations.’
“We as Canadians have been having some very tough conversations lately, I’d like Gabriola to witness one that can make us smile for a change.”
Before it was performed at Hudson Village Theatre in 2023, Kristen Da Silva was interviewed about Beyond the Sea and how she came to write it.
Gabriola Players is very happy to be sharing this delightful play with you.
