The story that began it all

The first work performed in 2005 by the newly-formed Gabriola Players was Morris Panych’s 7 STORIES.

To mark this 20th anniversary, we are going back to where it all began with a staged reading of this “fast-paced, philosophical and hilarious” play.

Because this revival will be a staged reading, no one will have to worry about memorizing lines. You will be performing with script in hand, so this is a perfect chance for newcomers to dip their toes into acting.

The Play

When you read 7 Stories, you’re pretty sure it began with Morris Panych waking up in the middle of the night thinking, “Suppose a man goes out on a ledge to kill himself and instead of the old cliché – the do-gooder cop/counsellor/whatever talking him back in – it turns out that the people who open their windows to talk to him are so preoccupied with their own, often trivial, problems that they barely notice he’s there?”

The Roles

And so it begins with THE MAN on the ledge. His first encounter is with CHARLOTTE and her married lover RODNEY. Next up comes LEONARD, a paranoid psychiatrist, followed by actor/con man MARSHALL, very religious RACHEL, style gurus MICHAEL and JOAN, partygoers PERCY, JENNIFER and AL, cynical NURSE WILSON and finally optimistic 100-year-old LILLIAN.

So, yes, there are 13 main roles to be cast. (There are also four very small roles which could be doubled up or played by people who really want the smallest role imaginable for their first go at acting.)

Rehearsals & Performances

Rehearsals will begin September 21. There will be four performances in November – Thursday-Saturday, 13-15 at 7pm and Sunday, 16 at 2pm.
