Gabriola Players has dusted off the dancing shoes, oiled up the unicycle and warmed up the vocal chords for the first Afternoon of Vaudeville, which hits the boards on May 17th at the Agi Hall at 3 pm. Part of the “May’d on Gabriola” weekend of creative makers, this traditional variety show entertainment extravaganza brings together 31 performers, including singers, dancers, comedians, jugglers, ukulele players, and even a popcorn girl.
An Afternoon of Vaudeville is the brainchild of J-Bird Rutgers, who produces and directs the show, accompanied by the Keep Right Quartet. Gabriola Players is expanding into a new genre by sponsoring and supporting the performance, and the theatre group is delighted to welcome new performers from a wide variety of entertaining genres. The afternoon will have you tapping your toes and singing along to familiar music from the 20s, 30s and 40s, as well as laughing from your cabaret chair at the energetic and lively acts.
A staple of the live entertainment world in Canada and the United States from the 1870s to the 1930s, a traditional vaudeville show was a series of unrelated acts ranging from classical music to acrobats on the same bill. Departing from tradition, the Gabriola Players’ “Afternoon of Vaudeville” acts all give a nod to the theme of “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” one of the songs performed by the vaudevillians as well as advice we could all follow in these challenging times.
