The Gabriola Players ALL GABRIOLA 2024 One-Act Play Festival opens in a week. Three fab new plays by three local writers!
The show kicks off with The Care Aide Visits by Dave Innell and reunites Wendy Phillips and Tammy Mueller, who appeared together last year in our award-winning production of Honour Among Thieves. In the play, Elise, a wealthy, self-centred divorcée, is annoyed to discover her cheerful young care aide has been replaced by Grace, a woman her own age, who is made of very stern stuff indeed. A battle of wills ensues, dredging up dark secrets from the past. Is it true that no one comes through adolescence unscathed?
Next up is The Waiting Room, the newest offering by Anne M. Holmes, whose play, An Unhelpful Complication, was a finalist in the 2018 Canadian National Playwriting Competition. two men meet in a waiting room at Vancouver General Hospital. Ernie (Shelly Green) and Frank (Neil Shilladay) are both there awaiting news about their wives. While they make conversation to pass the time, they are unaware of being observed by a woman (Christine McKim). As time passes, these strangers discover they have more in common than they could have imagined.
And finally, we are delighted to be staging Carol Fergusson’s first play, Shades of Green. In the play we meet artist Ivy (Donna Deacon) and her accountant husband George (Scott Rivers). Carol describes the play as “a contemporary commentary on love, marriage, jealousy and social media” which tells the story of “an urban couple’s journey through accusations, heightened emotions, professed love and the harsh realities of life”.
There will be four performances at the Rollo Centre: Thursday, May 30 to Saturday, June 1 at 7pm and Sunday, June 2 at 2pm.
