Crackers for Christmas!

Posted by

Well, of course it was gutting when we had to decide to cancel the panto for the second year in a row, but if there’s one thing we’ve learnt since March 2020, it’s that you can’t keep a good theatre company down.

Instead of a panto at the Community Hall last December we offered you Christmas Crackers, a live-online show featuring two brand new seasonal plays by local authors.

This December we’ll be back online with Christmas Crackers 2, this time offering you not two, but three cracking new Christmas-themed plays.

Thanks to vaccinations and strictly observed Covid protocols, the actors will be appearing together (and not in little Zoom boxes), which we are confident will considerably increase audience enjoyment. (It’s certainly been more fun for the actors to be able to rehearse together!)

Wendy Phillips, Joe DiCara, Donna Deacon and Marshall Mangan in Waiting for Nick.

In Waiting for Nick, written and directed by Anne M. Holmes, we meet Noel, his wife Angie and his sister Carol, all of whom are awaiting the arrival of Uncle Nick for Christmas dinner. As they converse, an unsavoury side of this “beloved” uncle is revealed. (WARNING: This one is definitely not for the kiddies.)

Peter Robbins and Dave Innell in Gabriola Christmas Carol.

TJ Radcliffe, writer/director of Gabriola Christmas Carol  has reimagined the Dickens story in his play set in the present day. A very much still alive Jacob Marley is hosting his old business partner Ebenezer Scrooge for dinner on Christmas Eve. Can reminders of the past and present persuade Scrooge to abandon his plans for a future which will ruin the island Marley loves?

Scott Rivers, Jean Wyenberg, Lesley Hazeldine and Don Moser appear in JJ’s Christmas Wish, along with Kerry Woodrow.

Trying not to give too much away, Ray Appel, writer and director of JJ’s Christmas Wish, says: “JJ has never had a big break. He is struggling to write a screenplay for a big Christmas movie contest. Everything completely changes when he meets a beautiful but lonely woman; Tabitha. Through crazy circumstances and with help from his roommate and Tabitha, he soon discovers that sometimes the Christmas present you wanted isn’t the one you really needed.”

You will have four chances to catch Christmas Crackers 2: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 9, 10 and 11 at 7pm and Sunday, December 12 at 2pm.

Tickets are $15 and you can purchase them by clicking here or simply scroll down further on this page to complete the ticket form

NB: The board of Gabriola Players recently decided to switch from using (and paying a fee to) PayPal to utilising Canada Helps for ticketing and donations. The user fee charged by Canada Helps goes directly into supporting the fundraising efforts of charities across Canada. The process is slightly different, but quite straightforward.
